What makes Liesl's work different from other model horse painters is not only is she a professional artist/illustrator by trade, but she also has a huge amount of Fine Art experience behind her. She has brought this training into the model horse world, stepping out of traditional mediums and forging a new method of painting. Her work is TOP LSQ, garnering multiple championships in halter, workmanship, and performance.
About how she paints...
"There are a lot of people who work in oils, and a lot of people who work in pastels. As I continued to paint, neither medium was working for me... oils left a brushy feeling (ironic for me, since I do all my portraiture work in oils), while pastels left a grainy feeling. I loved the fluid, smoothness of acrylics, but often times they went flat.
It was because of this I began creating/mixing my own paints; something I hadn't done in a while. In doing so, I am able to control exactly how much (and what kind) of pigment is in the medium, as well as dry time and viscosity. In painting with my own blend, I can create models that have all the glowing beauty of oils, only with a flawless smooth finish that will not crack with age. When people see my work in person, they often say it looks just like oil painted horses... only much, much smoother.
I am proud to offer my painting services to the hobby, and am overjoyed at the great response I've had to my work. Enjoy!"
